The more I think about Sousuke’s injury the sadder it gets because competitive swimming is really unforgiving. As we’ve seen a few episodes earlier, winning or losing is a matter of milliseconds. If you’re aiming for the top then you have to give it your all and unfortunately an injury or sickness will hinder you. Like Sousuke said: “If you overdo it, you won’t be able to do what you could before.”. If he can’t keep up with the grueling pace then he is bound to be left behind.
Like can you imagine the despair and bitterness he must feel; he was scouted, everyone had high expectations of him and he had such a bright future ahead of him and now achieving his dream might be impossible because his body failed him.
I KNEW IT
SOUSUKE HAS A SHOULDER INJURY (AKA SWIMMER’S SHOULDER)
that’s really, really sad though goddammiT
I saw this post about Sousuke possibly having an injury/sickness that prevents him from swimming and to be honest I think it’s quite likely.
Swimming is a fairly safe sport, but there are some risks especially for competitive swimmers who practice a lot. For example in freestyle the kick is mainly for balance and your upper body does 80-90 percent of the work. Sousuke’s swimming styles are butterfly and freestyle which is why I think he might have something that’s known as the “swimmer’s shoulder” (I have no idea what it’s actually called in English I just translated it from Finnish).
Basically it’s an injury that usually develops as a result of excessive training. The injury might heal poorly and the treatment could be difficult. Sometimes surgery is required.
As a former competitive swimmer I wanted to give my two cents regarding the latest episode of free.
Basically I’m just rambling, don’t mind me.
There is absolutely no way Makoto would make such a beginners mistake in the 200m freestyle race. That boy has been swimming for years, he knows how to pace himself. I assume he’s been a competitive swimmer for quite a while so that means he probably practices several times a week if not every day and he swims several kilometers per practice. In addition it doesn’t matter what stroke or distance you specialize in, you have to practice everything.
(Furthermore Rei says in the beginning of the episode that Makoto practiced hard every day for the 200m freestyle race. Also Rin is worried and in disbelief when he sees Makoto swim in such a reckless way.)
Excuse my French but that was some real fucking desperation in his swimming. Makoto didn’t make a mistake, he knew exactly what he was doing and how risky it was. He knew that the only way he could hope to win against Haru was to swim as fast as he could from the beginning until the end. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way in 200 meter races so his stamina was bound to run out in the end.
